In their own words

GH

Geoffrey Hartley

British expatriate, Phuket

"I came with a carrier bag of papers I hadn't looked at properly in years — pension statements, old award letters, a couple of forms I'd never completed. Martin worked through the lot in just over two hours. The filing system he set up is genuinely simple, and the summary told me exactly which office to write to about my state pension. I wish I'd done it earlier."

Danielle Lefèvre

French national, Phuket

"The Frameworks session was very useful for understanding how the French system works alongside any Thai resident requirements. I had some confusion about documentation that had built up, and the session helped me understand what each piece of paper actually represents. They were honest that some of my specific questions needed to go to the French consulate — but they told me exactly which desk and provided a contact reference."

Robert Prentice

Australian, Phuket

"I did the full programme before turning 65. Half a day, which sounded like a lot, but it covered everything — the documents were sorted, I left with a checklist of things I need to submit to Centrelink and the Australian embassy, and a separate reference sheet for my superannuation contact. Everything printed and in a folder. No fuss."

Marek Vítek

Czech national, Phuket

"For me the language barrier with official documents has always been the difficulty — not just English to Czech, but understanding what the category of document actually means. The session with Cairn clarified several things I'd been uncertain about for a long time. It's a different kind of help from a financial adviser — more practical and immediate."

Sandra Eriksson

Swedish, retired in Phuket

"Organised and unhurried. I appreciated that the session didn't feel rushed or like I was being talked past. They asked questions and listened. The Pensionsmyndigheten contact they provided turned out to be the correct department directly — which saved me a round of wrong calls."

James Buchanan

Canadian, Phuket

"I did the Paper Trail session first, and then went back for the Frameworks talk a couple of months later once I'd gathered more of my documentation. The two together gave me a clear picture. Not cheap for what it is, but the directory they produced for the CPP contact was worth the appointment on its own."

Three client journeys

TW

Thomas W., New Zealand national

Complete Organise-and-Signpost Programme

The situation

Thomas had been living in Phuket for seven years with pension documents from two different New Zealand schemes held in no particular order. He was approaching 65 and needed to understand what claim steps were involved, but found the NZ Superannuation information confusing in relation to his overseas residency status.

What the session covered

Documents were sorted into two labelled sets matching his two schemes. The frameworks overview explained the overseas pension portability considerations generally. The signpost directory identified the Work and Income New Zealand overseas services contact and the relevant application process landing page.

The outcome

Thomas left with his papers in two clear folders, a printed checklist of what he needed to submit, and the correct contact for his overseas NZ Super application. He contacted the agency within the week and reported back that the process went more smoothly than he expected.

"Having everything in folders with a reference sheet meant I didn't have to think about where things were when I sat down to make the calls."
AC

Angela & Colin F., British couple

Paper Trail Organisation (attended together)

The situation

Angela and Colin had accumulated years of pension correspondence — state pension statements, an occupational scheme from Colin's former employer, and some older policy documents they were no longer sure were current. Nothing was labelled and the most recent statement was three years old.

What the session covered

Documents were sorted separately for each person, grouped by scheme type, and labelled clearly. The older policy documents were identified as likely lapsed and noted in the summary as worth a verification letter to the provider. The HMRC state pension enquiry line was included in the written summary as the next contact point for both.

The outcome

Both left with individual, labelled document folders and a shared written summary covering what each needed to follow up. Colin contacted the occupational scheme trustee and confirmed one of the older policies had indeed lapsed, which resolved a long-running uncertainty.

"It wasn't just tidy — it was actually clear for the first time. We knew what we had and what we didn't."
